HERBS THAT CAN PROMOTE DIGESTION

DEFINITION: These are the herbs that can promote digestion and remove retained food

FUNCTION: Promote digestion, removed retained food, revive te stomach and harnonize the function of the nmiddle jiao. Some of the herbs can also strengthen the function of the spleen.

INDICATIONS: Retained food marked by fullness in the epigastrium and abdomen, acid regurgitation, regurgitation, nauseam vomitingm abnormal defacation and weakness of the spleen and stomach marked by indigestion.

COMPATABILITY:
-Herb preventing flow of qi
-Add herbs warming up the midle jiao to disperse cold in case of presentation of cold manifestations
-For cases with heat transformed from the stagnated food, add herbs bitter in taste and cold in nature to purge heat etc.


SHAN ZHA (Hawthorn Fruit)

Sour, sweet and slightly warm
Spleen, stomach and liver

ACTION:
-Promote digestion and remove retained food
-Activate blood flow and dissipate nodules

INDICATION:
-Retained food, especially retained meat in the middle jiao marked by fullness in the epigastruum and abdomen abdominal pain and diarrhea
-Postpartum abdominal pain and lochiarrhea caused by stagnation of blood or distending pain and lowering down sensation in hernia
-Raw Shan Zha is often used to tread hypertension, CHD, and hyperlipidemia

10-15g or up to 30g


SHEN QU (Medicated Leaven)

Sweet, pungent and warm
Spleen and stomach

ACTION:
-Promote digestion and harmoize function of the stomach

APPLICATION:
-Indigestion marked by fullness in the epigastrium and abdomenm poor appetite, borboygmus and diarrhea, often used with Shan Zha and Mai Ya.
-Pill form often taken with a formula containing metal or stone source herbs

MAI YA (Germinated Barley)

Sweet and Bland
Spleen stomach and liver

ACTION:
-Digest food (starch), harmonize function of the middle jai and quit secretion of milk

APPLICATION:
-Indigestion marked by retained food, poor appetite and fullness in the epigastrium and abdomen
-Used to quit secretion of milk or distending pain in te breasts due to retention of milk. (Everyday, raw and stir fried Mai Ya, 30-60g is to be decocted and taken orally.)
-Dredge flow of the liver (as an assistant herb) for stagnation of the liver qi and incoordination between the liver and the spleen.

10-15g or 30-120g

CC: Not used for woman at the breast-feeding period.


GU YA (Rice Sprout)

Sweet and bland
Spleen and stomach

ACTION:
-Promote digestion and harmonize function of the middle jiao
-Strengthen the spleen and stomach

APPLICATION:
-Indigestion, retained food (starch) and poor appetite due to spleen deficiency
(Milder than Mai Ya)

10-15g and up to 30g


LAI FU ZI (Radish Seed)

Pungent, sweet and bland
Spleen, stomach and lung

ACTIONS:
-Promote digestion, remove retained food
-Lower down rising of qi and dissolve phlegm

APPLICATIONS:
-Indigestion marked by fullnes in the epigastrium and abdomen, acid regurgitation, or abdominal pain with unsmooth discharge of loose stool
-Cough and asthma due to excessive phlegm in the lung

6-10g
CC: This herb can consume qi, so it is not sugested for cases with qi deficiency, these without food retention or phlegm retention


JI NEI JIN (Chicken's Gizzard-Skin)

Sweet and bland
Spleen stomach, small intestine, and bladder

ACTIONS:
-Strengthen the function of the splen to promote digestion
-Consolidate essence and stop leukorrhea

APPLICATIONS:
-Indigestion, retained food or malnutrition in children
-Enuresis or emission
-Dissolving hardness: Urinary or biliary stone

3-10g
Powder of the herb has a better effect than that used in decoction. 1.5-3g each time for powder.

HERBS STOPPED BLEEDING

Definition: These are herbs taking stopping bleeding as their main actions

Indications: Bleeding

Classification: Cooling blood to stop bleeding, astringing to stop bleeding, removing blood stasis to stop bleeding and warming up meridians to stop bleeding.

ATTENTION: If there is still some stagnated blood, add some herbs to activate flow of qi and blood.


DA JI (Japanese thistle)

Sweet, bitter and cold
Heart and liver

ACTIONS:
-Cool blood and arrest bleeding, dissipate stagnated blood to subdue swelling

APPLICATION:
-Coughing blood, epistaxis, hematuria, etc,
-Carbuncles or furuncles (raw)
-Hypertension and hepatitis: This herb can lower blood pressure and relieve jaundice

10-15g
Fresh one 30-60g


XIAO JI (Field thistle)

Sweet and cool
Heart and liver

ACTION:
-Cool blood, arrest bleeding, detoxicate and subdue swelling

APPLICATION:
-Bleeding due to blood heat
-Carbuncles due to toxic heat

10-15g, or 30-60g (fresh)


DI YU (Sanguisorba Root)

Bitter, sour and slightly cold
Liver, stomach and large intestine

ACTIONS:
-Cool blood to stop bleeding, detoxicate and promote healing of a wound.

APPLICATIONS:
-Hematemesis, epistaxis, hematuria, bleeding in hemorrhoids, metrostaxis and metrorrhagia
-Burns, exzema and ulcers of the skin: One of the most important herbs for burns. *** It can be used in powder with sesame oil.

10-15g

CC: External application of Di Yu products should be avoided to patients with large area of burns, because some ingredients of the herb may be absorbed by the body to cause liver poisoning.


CHU MA GEN (Ramnie Root)

Sweet and cold
Heart and liver

ACTIONS:
-Cool blood to arrest bleeding
-Clear heat to treat excessive fetal movements
-Induce diuresis
-Detoxicate

APPLICATIONS:
-Bleeding due to blood heat
-Excessive movement of fetus or threatened abortion due to heat in pregnancy
-Carbuncles or bite by insects: use the fresh root of the herb to be applied on the affected part.
