DEFINITION: Herbs that can disperse the cold in the interior and thus treat interior cold patterns
FEATURES: Pungent and hot
ACTION: Warm up the middle jiao to strengthen the function of the spleen and the stomach and disperse cold to relieve pain, assist yang and rescue yang from collapse.
INDICATIONS: INTERIOR COLD PATTERNS:
-Invasion of pathogenic cold into the interior and ensuing distrubance of the spleen yang and the stomach yang, marked by cold pain in the epigastrum and abdomen, vomiting, diarrhea, etc.
-Excess of yin cold due to yang deficiency marked by aversion to cold, cold limbs, profuse clear urine, pale tongue with whitish coating, and deep pulse.
-Collapse of yang due to sweating, marked by cold limbs and feeble and indistinct pulse.
COMPATIBILITY:
-Use herbs relieving exterior patterns together when there is exterior patterns.
-Use herbs that promote flow of qi together in the case of stagnated cold causing stagnation of qi.
-Use herbs that can warm and tonify the spleen and the kidney for cases with spleen yang and kidney yang deficiency.
-Use the herbs that can strongly tonify the promordial qi for cases with collapse of qi.
ATTENTIONS:
Improper use of the herbs can cause impariment of the body fluid.
Not suggested for heat patterns, yin deficiency patterns or pregnant women.
FU ZI (Prepared Aconite)

-Collapse of yang: Marked by cold sweating, cold limbs, feeble and indistict pulse

-Kidney yang deficiency: Marked by aversion to cold, cold limbs, soreness and weakness of the loins and knees, impotence and frequent cold urination

-Heart yang deficiency: Palpitation, shortness of breath, cadialgia due to CHD
-Arthralgia: More suitable for exuberance of cold dampness marked by pain of the joints of all over the body

-Arthralgia due to cold dampness, cold pain in the heart and abdomen, migraine, traumatic injury
(Stronger cold-dispersing and pain-relieving effect that Fu zi.)

-Kidney yang deficiency
-Cold pain in the abdomen, arthralgia due to cold dampness, pain in the lower back and cold stagnation in the blood marked by amenorrhea and dysmenorrhea
-Carbuncle that fails to rupture after formation of pus
-Deficiency of both qi and blood
-It can also be used to induce the heat from the flowing deficient yang back to its origin.***
2-5g to be taken in powder with water. It should be decocted later when used in decoction.
ATTENTION: Use this herb with great care for patients with fire exuberance due to yin deficiency, excessive heat, bleeding due to blood heat or pregnant woman.
WU ZHU YU (Fructus Eoudiae)
Pungent, bitter, hot and slightly toxic
Liver, spleen and stomach
ACTION:
-Disperse cold to relieve pain
-Soothe flow of the liver qi and dry dampness
APPLICATIONS:
-Cold pain in the stomach or the abdomen, pain due to hernia and diarrhea due to cold dampness
-Pain in beriberi due to cold dampness
-Acid regurgitation and vomiting
-Application of this herb at the sole can induce fire to flow downward to treat ulcer of the tongue and mouth.***
