PRESCRIPTIONS FOR DISEASES OF THE HEAD, FACE AND LIMBS

PRESCRIPTION FOR HEADACHE

-Causes

GB 20 (Fengchi)
-Requires strong stimulation, esp. with chronic migraine
-Forhead: Toward the opposite eye
-Whole head: Toward the nose
-Jaw pain or difficulty speaking: Toward the jaw

LR 3 (Taichong)

FUNCTIONS:
-Regulating the meridian qi, moving stagnation, alleviating pain

MANIPULATIONS:
Even reinforcing and reducing method. Ashi points with around needles or seven star neddles

INDICATIONS:
-Whole headache, migraine, vertex headache, back headache, vascular headcache, high blood pressure headache, neurosis headache.

PRESCRIPTION ANALYSIS:
-All yang converge at head, when exterior factor attack body, or seven emotion inury the inside body, will affect the head at last, cause the obstruction in the meridian and collateral, lead to headache.
GB 20: Where the meridian path through, where the indication is
ASHI: Drainage the local obstruction of the mneridian
LI 4, LR3: Four gate points, and have good effect for stopping pain

PRESCRIPTION FOR FACIAL PARALYSIS
-Central nerve
-Peripheral nerve
-Facial nerve (Cranial 7)
Prescription can treat both, but is mainly for Facial Paralysis

-Facial nerve damage
-Perpandicular insertion, almost toward opposite ear, into different levels
LI 4 (Hegu)
-Distal point, for opposite side facial paralysis

FUNCTIONS:
-Draining the meridian and activating the collaterals, stopping pain

MANIPULATIONS:
-According to the different period of the disease use different needling techniques or with the moxa
-Acute period: Onset-2 weeks

GB 20: Important point for five sense organ diseases
DU 23: Can open orifices, disperse obstruction

-Easy to get "immediate" results, but difficult to treat in entirety

-Can switch LI points to SJ points for medial pain

FUNCTIONS:
-Activating blood circulation, stretching tendons

Oblique insertion pointing toward painful area
-"Green dragon swinging its tail" needling technique
-Sensation should be from the distal to the elbow

INDICATIONS:
-Elbow heaviness, numbness, motor disturbance

PRESCRIPTION ANALYSIS:
LI 11, LI 4, LI 10: Activate blood and qi circulation, drainage meridian and collateral
SJ 5: Relieve the elbow pain

CLINICAL APPLICATIONS:
-External humeral epicondylitis: Add LI 8, LI 9
-Internal humeral epicondylitis: Add SI 8, HT 4, HT 5
-Anconeal process of ulna bursitis: Add SJ 10 (Oblique toward tip of elbow)
-SJ 5, distal points first, then local points (5-6 treatments)
***Whenever we treat pain syndromes, do the distal points first, then after pain is relieved, do local points.

DISTAL POINTS: Li 11, Opposite side ankle points (When treating ankle points, you can use opposite side wrist points and vice versa: "Same name meridians.")***

Remember, when you do the opposite side, have patient move the painful area.

FUNCTIONS:
-Stretching tendons and activating collaterals

MANIPULATIONS:
Even needling method, moxa is available

INDICATIONS:
-Wrist heaviness, numbness, motor disturbance, (thumb, point and middle finger.)

PRESCRIPTION ANALYSIS:
PC 6: Median nerve pass through
PC7, LI 5, LI 4, ASHI: Regulate the meridian qi and blood of the wrist

CLINICAL APPLICATIONS:
-Wrist drop caused by radial nerve injury: Add HT 1, LI 14
-Wrist sprain: Add SJ 4, SI 5
-Interphalangeal joint injury: Baxie, SJ 3 ("Posterior Baxie" are 1 cun proximal to Baxie on the back of the hand. "Behind the joint.")
ARM PARALYSIS: Use these three above prescriptions together.***


PRESCRIPTION FOR SCIATICA
GB 30 (Hauntiao)
-Shooting sensation down to heel (Or change needling direction.)
-Thrusting/lifting
-Needle toward front of body and slightly downward
-Dull or slow sharp sensation
-Deep needling technique, 3-5 cun needles.
BL 54 (Zhibian)
-Sensation down to the heel (Depending upon patient's position)
-Either/or GB 30 or BL 54 depending upon location of pain
BL 25 (Dashangshu)
GB 34 (Yanglingquan)
BL 40 (Weizhong)

FUNCTIONS:
-Activating collaterals and stopping pain

MANIPULATIONS:
Even needling technique

INDICATIONS:
-Pain on the buttock, leg, motor disturbance (Stroke)

PRESCRIPTION ANALYSIS:
GB 30, BL 54: Local point, drainage obstruction of the meridian
BL 25, GB 34, BL 40: Distal point, regulate shaoyang and taiyang meridian qi

CLINICAL APPLICATIONS:
-Pain in the back of the leg: Add BL 56
-Pain in the lateral of the leg: Add BL 39, GB 39 (Depending upon the location of the pain.)


PRESCRIPTION FOR GONITIS
-"Knee joint pain"

CLINICAL APPLICATIONS:
Rheumatic arthritis: Add Xiyan, moxa
-45 degrees toward the joint cavity (leg bent)
-Sensation just inside the joint
-Do not apply moxa on heat patterns
Osteoarthritis: Add ST 34, GB 34
-45 degrees toward the joint cavity (leg bent)
-Sensation just inside the joint
-Can also add: HEDING, GB 33.
-Damp heat Bi: SP 9


PRESCRIPTION FOR SPRAINED ANKLE

Stretching tendons and stopping pain

MANIPULATIONS:
Reducing with rotating needling

INDICATIONS:
-Ankle pain, talagia (Bottom of heel pain, Plantar fasciitis), headache

-Local point, activate meridian to stop pain

CLINICAL APPLICATIONS:
-Swollen and pain in the ankle: Add ST 41, GB 40
-Talagia: Add KI 6, GB 20
-Taiyang headache: GB 20, SI 3
