PRESCRIPTIONS FOR BENEFITTING QI

Qi: "The root of our life activity."

PRESCRIPTION FOR MOVING QI (Qi Stagnation)
Points
-LI 4 (Hegu)
-Yuan Source Point
-LR 3 (Taichong)
-Water point
-Yuan Source Point
-Shu-stream point
Regulate Qi
Locations- hand/foot
-Upper and lower combination
Yang Ming Meridian (Usually full of qi and blood)
Liver- soothe/smooth the liver
Liver qi normally descends
Combination of these points increases each other's function.

-Resolving stagnation of qi
-Expelling blood stasis
-Alleviating pain
-Regulationg menstruation
-Benefitting head and face

-Treats all sorts of qi stagnation

MANIPULATIONS

-Needle toward the wrist 60 degrees
-Combine w/ SP 6 for menstruation

Perpandicular insertion

INDICATIONS
-Distention and pain in lateral costal region, breat pain, heart pain, epigastric or abdominal pain, retention of urine, numbness and spasm of the limbs (liver wind, -can also include some tremors of the hand.)
-Dysmenorrhea, late period, irregular menstruation, amenorrhea, prolonged labor (w/ SP 6, electro-acupuncture), insufficient lactation (qi stagnation type)
-Headache, (Liver yang rising) dizziness, hypertension, deviation of eye and mouth

PRESCRIPTION ANALYSIS:
LI 4 regulates qi and moves qi
LR3: oothes te liver and regulates the qi activity
Yuan-Source and Yuan-Source combination, soothe the liver and regulate qi, move qi stagnation and regulate blood.

CLINICAL APPLICATIONS:
-Headache/ qi stagnation type (combine w/ local points, depending upon headache type.)
-Pain in the hypochondrium (combine w/GB24 or LR 14, combined w/ local points)
-Facial paralysis (esp in acute period, and combined with local points or distal points, depending upon meridians)


PRESCRIPTION FOR TONIFYING QI
-Mainly for qi deficiency
-Severe qi deficiency
-Qi or organ collapse
RN 6 (Qihai)
-Dan tian
-Regulate lower qi-sea
ST 36 (Zusanli)
-Lower he sea of stomach
-reinforce original qi
RN 17 (Tanzhong)
-Midline, level w/ 4th costal space
-Qi meeting point
-Upper qi-sea
-Thoracic qi


Lung qi
-Postnatal
Spleen stomach qi
-Postnatal, transforms foodstuff qi into essence
Kidney qi
-Prenatal (RN 6)

Yang Ming meridian -"full of qi and blood"

FUNCTIONS
-Fostering original qi
-Tonifying the qi of all over the body
-Tonifyiing yang
-Warming function of the qi
-Rescuing collapse of yang
-Feinting/coma

-Harmonizing the stomach and tonify the spleen
-Resolving dampness
-Due to qi deficiency (warming function)

MANIPULATION
-Reinforcing method, moxa is applicable
RN 17-transverse insertion (usually pointing downward)
RN 6-empty bladder first, if puncturing perpandicularly
-Treating organ collapse, let needle point upwards
ST 36 perpandicular

INDICATIONS
-Insufficiency of original qi, insufficiency of zang-organ qi, insufficienc of stomach qi
Qi stagnation=pain on pressure
-bloating
Qi deficiency=pressure may feel good
-not bloating
-Loss of consciousness from wind stroke, all kinds of chronic qi disease that do not respond to treatment, feebleness and weakness of the muscles, dizziness (qi deficiency dizziness)
-Chronic diarrhea, epigastria pain, vomiting, hiccup, constipation(due to qi deficiency), abdominal distention, pain and cold sensation at the abdomen
-Irregular menstruation, infertility, leukorrhagia
-Edema, inability to urinate(no strength to urination), heaviness of the limbs


PRESCRIPTION ANALYSIS:
RN 6: Fosters the original qi
RN 17: Regulates and tonifies the lung qi
ST 36: Tonifies the spleen and stomach qi
All three points combine together to tonify the qi fo all over the body.

CLINICAL APPLICATIONS
-Wind stroke
-Fainting
-Emergency RN 6 (apply moxa)
-Chronic diarrhea
-Chronic diarrhea may cause qi and blood deficiency,
-Combine w/ ST 25 or ST 37, alternate RN 6 w/ RN 4 (RN 4 mainly for yang, RN 6 also regulates -to get qi moving)
-constipation of qi deficiency patterns
-Patient likes to press the abdomen
-Pale face or tongue, pulse usually weak or deep
-Retention of urine
-Yang deficiency can't move the water passage
-Combine w/ RN 3 or RN 2 -both needled transversely or use moxa
-Health maintenance
-Promote health qi
-Can also use moxa instead of filiform needle



PRESCRIPTION FOR ASCENING QI
(Treating qi that is descending)
-Due to qi deficiency
-Lassitude/fatigue
-Organ collapse (prolapse)
DU 20 (Bai hui) "Hundred Meeting"
-Yang convergence point
BL 20 (Pishu)
-Back-shu of spleen (spleen qi holds organs in place)

FUNCTIONS
-Rasing qi and countering prolapse
-Tonifying qi and yang
-Can combine these points with tonifying spleen prescription.
-Nourishing the sea of marrow (Brain)
-Strengthening spleen

MANIPULATONS
Strengthen method, moxa is applicable
-Can use Jia ji points instead of BL 20

INDICATIONS
-Prolapse of the uterus, rectum
-Can use moxa on BL 20
-Poor memory, insomnia, loss of consciousness(due to qi descending), dizziness, tinnitus (for dizziness and tinnitus, can combine w/ prescription for qi deficiency)
-Specific deficiency of spleen qi
-Chronic diarrhea(due to spleen qi deficiency), lassitude and heaviness of the body, menorrhagia, distension and heaviness of abdomen
-Can combine local points for uterus, Zi Gong, ST 29,

PRESCRIPTION ANALYSIS
DU 20: Du meridian and Taiyang meridian coverge point, can raise yang and counter prolapse
BL 20: Back shu of spleen, can tonify spleen and benefit qi, raise the clear and descend turbid

CLINICAL APPLICATIONS
-Prolapse of uterus
-Combine with electro-acupuncture
-Dizziness
-Combine w/qi deficiency points, can also add SP 6 (for blood)
-Myasthenia gravis (Similar symptoms to Multiple Sclerosis, "No strength in the muscle." -Caused by muscle itself, not nerve.)

BLOOD FUNCTION:

-Heart fire "reddens" blood

Qi is commander of the blood and Blood is the mother of qi. (Very closely connected.)

MAIN PROBLEMS OF BLOOD:
-Stasis
-Fixed pain, numbness
-Purple color/dark red
-Menses
-Deficiency
-Dizziness
-Pale
-Dry skin
-Palpitation
-Blood heat
-Itching
-Acne
-Mental (Heat caused can't control the blood, and disturbs shen.)

PRESCRIPTION FOR DISPELLING BLOOD HEAT
SP 10 (Xue hai)
-Empirical point
-To activate blood
LI 11 (Qu chi)

FUNCTIONS
-Clearing heat and cooling blood
-Eliminating wind and alleviating itching
-Invigorating blood and harmonizing menstruation
-Expelling blood stasis and alleviating pain
-Calming the spirit

MANIPULATIONS:
Reducing method at LI 11
Reducing or reinforcing method at SP 10

INDICATIONS:
-Early period, heavy period, dysmenorrhea, metrorrhagia and metrostaxis
-Manic disorders, hypertension, dizziness
-Urticaria, eczema, dry skin, itching of skin, acne, shingles (herpes zoster)

PRESCRIPTION ANALYSIS:
SP 10: Activates blood circulation to cool the blood
LI 11: Clears away heat from blood

CLINICAL APPLICATIONS:
-Acne
-Lung or blood heat (for this prescription)
-(Stomach or intestine heat)
-(Qi stagnation)
-Combine w/ DU 14, BL 13, BL 12
-May combine with cupping, ST 43 or 44.
-Nose bleed
-DU 24, LI 20
-LR 2 for "emergency onset" (and all kinds of nose bleeding generally)
-Early period
-Caused by blood heat, disturbing blood circulation
-To regulate menstruation, apply SP 6, 8.
-Blood heat can also cause heavy menstruation

PRESCRIPTION FOR REMOVING BLOOD STASIS
BL 17 (Ge shu)
SP 10 (Xue hai)
LI 4 (He gu)
Upper and Lower combination, also Yin/Yang combination

FUNCTIONS:
-Invigorating blood and removing blood stasis
-Promoting blood circulation
-Activating channesl and releiving pain
-Fixed pain
-Benefitting skin

MANIPULATIONS:
Reducing or even method
-Can use jia ji point/perpandicular insertion instead

INDICATIONS:
-Dysmenorrhea, scanty period, amenorrhea
-Pain of the whole body
-Headache, mania-depression
-Qi stagnation type
-Urticaria, eczema, etc

PRESCRIPTION ANALYSIS
BL 17: Eight influential point of blood
SP 10: Activates blood circulation
LI 4: Moves qi and drains stasis, activates blood circulation

BL 18 (Gan shu)
-Liver back shu
BL 20 (Pi shu)
-Spleen back shu
ST 36 (Zu san li)
SP 6 (San yin jiao)
-"Three yin junction"

FUNCTIONS:
-Nourishing liver blood
-Benefitting head and eyes
-Regulating menstruation
-Spreading liver qi
-Harmonizing liver and spleen

MANIPULATIONS:
Strengthening method
-Can use moxa for ST 36

INDICATIONS:
-Headache, dizziness, tinnitus
-Blurred vision, dry eye, night blindness
-Scanty period, late period, amenorrhea
-Distention and pain of the abdomem abdominal masses, lack of appetite, vomiting, distention and pain of the lateral costal region, diarrhea

PRESCRIPTION ANALYSIS:
BL 18: back shu point of liver
BL 20: back shu point of spleen These two points combine together to produce and nourish blood
ST 36 and SP 6 can tonify stomach and spleen to nourish blood.

CLINICAL APPLICATION
-Dizziness
-Amenorrhea
-Blood deficiency type
-dry skin, hair, general dryness in the body for blood deficiency
-defciency type=pain, color of skin, tongue lips, mouth
